Okay I have two P3 boxes and a 1ghz celron computer I can build. I was thinking about using them for something linux based. Like file storage and stuff. I also have about 160 gb of storage available in 40 gb increments ( a few old hard drives laying around cheesy ) so I was going to put them all in a computer and let it run all the time. I could always just thow then out but it seems like a waste lol

I was also going to pick CBB's brain about that smoothwall stuff and see if I can use one for that too. Do you need a bunch of nic cards in a smoothwall box or how does that work?

If it works, don't toss it!

File/print servers are awesome, especially since you can do scheduled and/or manual networked backups of your PC(s). Plus you can set it up to be a mp3 server, too. Get a bigger hd for the backups and use the others for various OS's that you're playing with. Just my two pence.  cool

Even if I just stack all those hard drives in there and use it for an MP3 server it's better then throwing them away. Thanks for the reinforcement Z. I'll just throw a burner in it and then I can either network or burn a disk if I have to.

next Question... does anyone have an ata pci card for sale? that would make this job much easier.

I have the team speak server / game server I built form old parts and hard drives.  Infact I am going to add two more drives to it with a PCI IDE card.  It is nice like Z says to have a server around.

They're cheap. Just check out TigerDirect or NewEgg. Maybe eBay if you want to deal with that mess. Seriously, though, hard drives are so cheap these days, why not just get a 500 gb ATA drive for $100?

Well the only reason not to get a big drive is the fact that I do have all this crap laying around. I agree that buying a 500 gb drive is cheap and easier, but then what do I do with all these crappy parts. Also how do you get a single partition on a 500 gb drive? (without vista of course)  rolleyes

I actually turned CBB onto Smoothwall and am very happy with it myself and would reccomend it to anyone with sevral PC's on a home network especially if you do lot's of torrent downloads (for backups of course)  my WRT54G was choking under the load of my torrents but the smoothwall works great!!  It was a breese to setup and only took 2 NIC's.  IT lives in the closet with no mouse/keybors/monitor.  I do all administration remotely through SSH or the browser based utility.  Just like a store bought router.  It's AWESOME!!

Yeah HS I thought that you might have said it first but I think CBB mentioned it last. So how much memory and stuff do I need for this to run right? I guess not much since it basically does what a router does right? How would I run it with my dsl modem/router would I try to disable the router portion of it and just try to run the modem straight to the smoothwall box?

I think my smoothwall box has 128Mb of ram   maybe 256...but most likely 128  and a 20gb hard disk (which is about 18 Gb too big for smooth wall Smiley but my logs will never fill up!!!)

Cool I'll try this dell that I have. It won't run this linx distro that I have been trying but maybe smoothwall will work.

I think there is a way to setup smoothwall to include a NAS function... It's like setting up a Sumba share on a normal Linux box.... Hit the Smoothwall Forums there is a lot of good info there and quite possibly someone has built a disto with that function already in it, just need to install it... Smiley
